About pediatric, skin, and nail foot care

Understanding pediatric, skin, and nail foot care, and how we help.

Pediatric Foot Care care is offered at 15 Neuhaus Foot & Ankle clinics across Middle Tennessee. Choose a clinic near you at the end of this page.

Skin and nail problems are some of the most common reasons people visit a podiatrist, and children have their own special foot needs as they grow. Most of these problems are easy to treat when they are seen early.

This group covers everyday family foot care, including corns, warts, athlete's foot, ingrown and fungal nails, and the flat feet, walking patterns, and growth-related pain that show up in childhood.

Diagnosis and care

How we treat pediatric, skin, and nail foot care.

Step 1 · Diagnosis

We look closely at the skin and nails, and if needed test a small sample to confirm a fungus or wart. For children we check the shape of the foot, how the legs and feet line up, and how they walk and run. Most exams are quick and gentle, and X-rays are taken only when needed.

Step 2 · Treatment

Treatment is often simple and done in the office. We trim corns and calluses, treat warts with medicine or freezing, and clear athlete's foot and nail fungus with the right topical or oral care. We numb the toe and remove the sore part of an ingrown nail for fast relief, and can treat the nail root so it does not come back. For children, we may suggest stretches, supportive shoes, inserts, or activity changes, and we keep watching them as they grow.

Most children outgrow common problems like mild flat feet or toeing in. When a problem does not improve, causes pain, or affects walking, we discuss more support or, rarely, surgery. Stubborn warts, cysts, or ganglions can also be removed in a short procedure.

Recovery

What to expect.

Skin and nail treatments bring relief quickly, often the same day. Nail fungus grows out slowly, so it can take several months to see a clear nail. For children, many concerns settle with time and support, and we schedule follow up visits to make sure feet are growing well.

When to book: See a podiatrist if a spot on the foot hurts or changes, a nail is red, swollen, or draining, or your child has foot pain, trips often, or walks differently. See us sooner if you have diabetes.

Prevention

Tips to keep it from coming back.

  • Cut nails straight across and not too short
  • Keep feet clean and dry and change socks daily
  • Wear sandals in public showers and pools
  • Choose shoes that fit, and check children's shoes often
  • Do not pick at warts or cut corns yourself

FAQ

Pediatric Foot Care: your questions answered.

Call 615-220-8788
Are plantar warts contagious?

Yes, they can spread by touch or shared surfaces such as pool decks and locker rooms. Treating them early helps.

At what age should my child see a podiatrist?

Any age. Many parents come when a child has foot pain, an unusual walk, flat feet, or a nail problem. We are happy to check young feet.

Will my nail grow back after an ingrown toenail treatment?

Usually yes. If we treat the nail root to stop the edge from regrowing, that part of the nail will not come back, and we will explain your options first.
