Feet and ankles take hard hits from falls, twists, dropped objects, and years of running. A crack in a bone may start small and grow if you keep walking on it, and a puncture wound can bring in germs that cause infection.
This group covers acute injuries and overuse injuries in adults, children, and athletes, from broken toes and ankle fractures to stress fractures, turf toe, shin splints, and wounds.

Diagnosis and care
How we treat fractures, trauma, and sports injuries.
Step 1 · Diagnosis
We ask how the injury happened and check swelling, bruising, and the ability to bear weight. Digital X-rays in our offices give quick answers on most fractures and dislocations. For stress fractures and Lisfranc injuries we may order MRI or CT. Wounds are cleaned, checked for objects, and treated to prevent infection.
Step 2 · Treatment
Many fractures heal well with a boot, cast, or special shoe and careful protection from weight. Stress fractures need rest from the activity that caused them. Turf toe and shin splints respond to rest, taping, orthotics, and a slow return to sport. We clean and dress wounds, remove foreign bodies, and give tetanus and infection care when needed.
Some injuries, including displaced fractures, Lisfranc injuries, and fractures that do not heal, need surgery to hold the bones in position. Our fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeons explain the plan and support your recovery and return to play.
Recovery
What to expect.
Toe and simple foot fractures often need about six weeks. Stress fractures often need six to eight weeks or more. More serious injuries take longer. We give you clear milestones for weight bearing, therapy, and return to sport.
When to book: Get care right away if you cannot bear weight, the foot looks out of shape, you see a bone or deep wound, or you have a puncture wound. See us soon for any pain in one spot of the foot that keeps growing with activity.
Prevention
Tips to keep it from coming back.
- Build up training slowly
- Wear shoes made for your activity and replace them on time
- Warm up and cross train
- Eat enough calcium and vitamin D
- Wear closed shoes on job sites and in the yard
How do I know if it is a sprain or a break?
They can feel the same. Pain over a bone, heavy bruising, and trouble putting weight down are warning signs. An X-ray gives a clear answer.
Can I keep running with a stress fracture?
No. Running can turn a small crack into a full break. Rest and a proper plan get you back sooner.
What is a Lisfranc injury?
It is an injury to the joints in the middle of the foot. It can look like a simple sprain but often needs a careful exam and sometimes surgery.
