Alcoholic Neuropathy

How Alcohol Affects the Feet

Alcoholic peripheral neuropathy is a foot condition caused by the consumption of alcoholic beverages over an extended amount of time. Ethanol, the alcoholic component, is toxic to nerve tissue and can cause nerve damage. Over time, the damage can affect the nerves in the feet and hands, which causes a loss of sensation. It is similar to diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The nerve damage is irreversible. The nerves will never heal. People suffering from alcoholic peripheral neuropathy live with the same risks as those with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and they should take the same measures to keep their feet safe. There is also another form of peripheral neuropathy that is brought about by exposure to toxins, like pesticides and heavy metals. It is equally damaging to a person’s health.

Treatment for this condition may include:

  • Vitamin B-12 injections
  • Oral medications
  • Topical ointments
  • Magnetic therapy
  • Galvanic stimulation (a therapeutic use of electric current)

Remember to always consult with your doctor before taking any medication. If you believe you are suffering from any form of neuropathy, you should seek medical attention as soon possible to get a proper diagnosis and get treatment started.
