It's possible! Your feet carry the weight of your body while you are performing your daily activities. Therefore, weight gain can cause foot pain, but this is not the only reason. We have recently implemented a program into our practice to help our patients become healthy and to reduce the amount of foot pain our patients are experiencing if our patients are interested in the program. No matter what the cause is for your foot pain, it is important that you take care of your foot pain and make an appointment with your local podiatrist if you have foot pain. Foot pain is not normal. We want your feet to be happy and healthy and will treat you foot problems to the best of our ability!

Dr. Matthew Neuhaus discusses the important of living a healthy lifestyle and how you can keep your doctor's visits to a minimum by losing weight the right way and keeping the weight off for good.

Stress fractures is something commonly seen in our office for patients who are runners or someone who has rapidly increased their activity in a short period of time. The most common place on your foot to get a stress fracture is your metatarsals, the five long bones that run through the midfoot to the bases of your toes. The best sign that you have a stress fracture will most likely be increased general foot pain that interferes with your workout or running. This pain will then have a focal point of pain which you can pinpoint exactly where you are having the foot pain. While stress fractures often occur when over-training, other causes are possible. You can also have multiple stress fractures at one time.

Often, a patient will have x-rays taken of their foot to determine if a stress fracture is present. If the x-rays do not show any injury to the metatarsal bones, sometimes a CT scan or MRI will be ordered to see possible injuries. If you think you may have a stress fracture, please call our office at (615) 220-8788 to set up an appointment to have your foot further examined and properly treated.

There is a major difference between over-the-counter inserts and custom made inserts made specifically for you. Not all insurance companies cover custom inserts, or orthotics, and we do not expect our patients to pay for these out of pocket if he or she cannot afford the orthotics. There are literally hundreds of products on the market that claim that they “will improve foot comfort” or “relieve pain”. Ashoe insert is typically cushioned for comfort yet these do not provide any real support and often only relieve pain for a short time, eventually increasing foot problems as they wear down.

Dr. Matthew Neuhaus discusses the difference between the over-the-counter inserts in stores compared to the ones in our office that we recommend for our patients experiencing foot pain. For more information about the best shoe inserts, call our office at (615) 220-8788 or stop by our office. For starters, foot orthotics are shoe inserts designed to support, align, or improve the function of the foot. These are meant to fit comfortably inside your shoes. Since orthotics are are prescription devices, they are custom-made to suit your individual needs and biomechanics (the way your body moves). Orthotics are prescribed by your podiatrist when you are experiencing a particular foot problem after a complete examination. The podiatrist should take into account the way you move, the type of footwear you wear, your occupation, and other lifestyle factors.

A personalized approach comes into play because your podiatrist will come up with a care plan for you. This will include they type of prescription for your orthotics, the manufacturing of your custom orthotics, proper fitting and follow-up with your orthotics to make sure everything is designed correctly according to your care plan. Orthotics provide you with a long-term solution for the treatment of many foot problems, including but not limited to, corns, callouses, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, recurrent ankle sprains, and stress fractures.

Ultimately, if you are experiencing any type of foot problem and over-the-counter inserts are not properly working, we recommend our patients receive custom orthotics. They may be expensive if your insurance does not cover the orthotics, but the custom inserts could potentially last you 10+ years. Plus if the orthotics align, support and/or improve the function of your feet and life, there should be no cost that is too high.

A recent study explains that patients with Gout should consider wearing proper footwear to decrease foot pain. The shoe fit, patient age, general foot structure, motion control properties, shoe cushioning and wear patterns are six different aspects to consider when looking at shoes to buy to help with foot pain and Gout. More than 60% of shoes have improper cushioning and only 36% has heel cushioning. Patients should also consider the age of the shoe when experiencing foot pain. If you have had your shoes longer than 12 months, the potential risk of developing foot pain symptoms increases exponentially. Also, look into changing your shoes twice a day using shoes with proper support.

When looking for a good shoe, be sure the shoe has proper stability, as well as good cushioning and support. Good shoes will help eliminate foot pain symtoms with Gout. Poor footwear includes most sandals, flip-flops, slippers and moccasins. One thing we frequently hear in our office is that comfort and cost are major factors when choosing a shoe that fits. When looking to buy a good quality shoe, the most expensive pair is not always the best solution to ease your foot pain. Shoes that have a high, smooth toe box or shoes with mesh for your feet to breathe, like sneakers are ideal. If you are looking for a good sandal, make sure the sandal has good structural support and proper shock absorption in order to manage foot pain in patients with Gout. Overall, finding a good shoe with adequate cushioning, motion control and proper width for your forefoot is crucial in controlling foot pain in our Gout patients.

Your feet are just as important as any other part of your body. Therefore, it is crucial you take care of your feet. Some conditions of the feet are so common that most people think these are normal or can be treated with time especially when the problem has to do with the skin on your feet. There are over-the-counter treatment products that have worked for patients in the past. However, when the skin condition does not get better or the condition gets worse, it is time to schedule an appointment with your local Podiatrist.

Here are six common skin conditions of the feet:

	1. Verruca or Plantar Warts: This condition is a live virus that resides in the upper layer of the skin. Some over-the-counter topical acids or wart bandaids have been used to cure this, but if the wart returns or doesn't go away, making an appointment is crucial to prevent numerous warts from occurring. The "How to remove a plantar wart procedure" video shows exactly how the wart would be removed if acid does not work. If you are unsure if you have a plantar wart, check out our video that explains the symptoms of plantar warts.

	2. Athlete's Foot Infection or Tinea Pedis: This skin condition loves moist, warm areas of the body and you tend to see this around athletes (hence the name). Saunas, pool areas, athlete's shoes, and hot showers are common places for Athlete's Foot to appear.

	3. Xerosis: This skin condition is diagnosed when a patient has low moisture in the skin. This can lead to painful cracks, especially on your heels.

	4. Fungal Toenails or Onychomycosis: This condition is diagnosed when a patient has thickened, discolored, and flaky toenails. You have have toenail fungus on only one toenail, a few toenails, one foot, or all your toenails. This just depends on the severity of your toenail fungus. Dr. Neuhaus discusses the options for toenail fungus and how it can be treated in our YouTube video.

	5. Calluses and Corns (Pressure Hyperkeratosis): This skin condition tends to form at areas of the foot where there is pressure against shoes. One of the most common reasons for this includes bone deformities like Bunions, or Hammertoes.

	6. Ingrown Toenails or Paronychia: This toenail infection has several causes. A simple procedure is done in the office that will remove the ingrown toenail and help prevent the toenail from becoming infected again.

One of the most common questions I get asked by my patients is, "what is the perfect shoe for me to wear?" The answer is simple: There is no such thing as one perfect shoe. Feet vary in shapes and sizes as well as undergo a wide array of activities. The one vital role that shoes play is to protect your feet from all external dangers.

When you buy a new pair of shoes, it is important to make sure that your new shoes fit properly, are supportive for the activities you will engage in, and do not hurt or cause damage to your feet. Making sure your shoes fit your feet is part of properly caring for your feet. Therefore, it is important that you look at options for different styles to see which shoe best fits your particular shoe shape. Another tip to keep in mind is your feet are rarely both the same size and it is important you fit your new shoes to your larger foot so both feet experience the comfort and support of the correct fit.

Increased nail thickness, or bumps on the nail, can be psoriasis, a skin disease. Your foot doctor will check your toenails to make sure they are healthy. Healthy nails are pink, free of dirt, and grow into the grooves normally. Your podiatrist can give you a variety of treatment options for any and all your toenail problems. Common conditions of your toenails include ingrown toenails, thickened nails, fungal infections, other infections, and trauma.

	Who gets nail problems?

All ages of people can go through changes with their toenails including thick, brittle, curved, discolored, infected, and grooved nails. As you grow older, you are more likely to develop toenail problems because you are prone to have poor circulation.

	What causes nail problems?

Toenail problems can be caused by warts, tumors under the nail bed, infection, or poor circulation. One major cause to problems are incorrectly fitting shoes that press too tightly on the toenails. Another major cause is injury to the nail that causes bruising or an infection. This can cause permanent nail deformity.

The summer is the worst time of year when it comes to wearing improper shoes. Most sandals have no support or a very little amount and this can lead to foot problems. Also, it is vital to make sure that your shoes correctly fit your feet. These two tips are primary components to overall foot care. Poor fitting shoes can lead to blisters, bruising, ingrown toenails and other foot problems. You want your shoes to fit properly so you can avoid these complications.

When you are shopping for a new pair of shoes, the most important factor is that your size is not the same from shoe to shoe. The size of your shoes varies from one style or manufacture to the next. Therefore, you may wear a womens size 8 running shoe, but you may need to wear a size 7 or 9 dress shoe. One more helpful hit when comparing the same shoe style , a half size larger will be 1/6 inch longer and a width wider will be 1/16 inch wider at the ball of your foot and a total of 1/8 inch wider in circumference. Then, you need to look at the support the shoe gives you. In Middle Tennessee this week, the temperature outside has been nothing but HOT and every one wears sandals or flip-flops. Sadly, most do not have support but we found you the right kind of flip-flops for the summer. Chacos, Dansko, FitFlop Sandals and Orthaheel Sandals are among the recommended list for supportive sandals that are great for your feet.

One of our own patients sent us an e-mail giving our office feedback regarding our patient service. Here is what he had to say:

" We both provide services to the public in different industries and therefore I am fully aware that negative feedback is routine but positive feedback is infrequent. Please express to your staff my appreciation for the professionalism and high standard of conduct by which you and your staff managed my care during the last seven months. I am a fairly difficult patient / customer and do not express such appreciation where it is not warranted. I also do not frequently recommend another professional to others as the performance of those professionals is frequently wanting is some way. I have recommended to several friends and acquaintances that they come to NFA for medical treatment. Monday, I was standing in the hallway waiting for the office to open after your lunch break. There was a new patient with me who was disgruntled that the office had not opened even though it was before the appointed time. In order to mitigate his emotional frustration I explained to him the quality of my experience and the fact that you saved my foot when others wanted to remove it. Once again, please express my appreciation also to your staff! " - J.S.

Everyone in the office greatly appreciates this type of feedback as this is what encourages us to continue the type of service and care within our office each day. Thank you!

If you would like to read more patient reviews, go to our testimonials page. If you would like to give us feedback as a patient, you can either fill out a comment card during your visit in the office and place this in the secure box at the front desk or you can send us an e-mail under the Contact Us tab at the top of the page. Any type of feedback helps us to strive to be the best office.

Tiger Woods will be missing the US Open due to a knee and Achilles tendon injury. Apparently, Tiger Woods has been playing off his injury for quite some time and acted as though it was something minor. However, due to recent sightings of Woods, the accuracy of his injuries has been kept secret. "I am extremely disappointed that I won't be playing in the U.S. Open, but it's time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future," Woods wrote Tuesday on his website and USA Today reposted the comment. "I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed. I hope to be ready for AT&T National (in July), the next two majors and the rest of the year." No surgery is currently planned for Woods, only physical therapy, massage therapy, R-I-C-E Method, and a boot for protection of the Achilles tendon.

The Achilles tendon, the longest tendon in the body, runs down the back of the lower leg and connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. The Achilles tendon helps you walk by helping you raise your heel off the ground. As in "overuse" disorders, Achilles tendonitis can be caused by a sudden increase of a repetitive activity involving the Achilles tendon. This puts too much stress on the tendon too quickly, leading to an injury of the tendon fibers. If not treated correctly, the body will not fully repair the injured tissue. The structure of the tendon is changed and results in continued pain. Athletes, like Pro-Golfer Tiger Woods, are at high risk for developing disorders of the Achilles tendon. Various treatments are available for Achilles Tendonitis based on the length of the injury and the extent of damage to the tendon. Braces, R-I-C-E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate) Method, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, and possibly surgery are possible treatment options. Basic stretching exercises are also available to help strengthen the Achilles tendon after proper treatment.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a noninvasive surgical treatment method that uses sound waves to stimulate healing in some foot disorders, including heel pain. Because there is no incision, ESWT offers two main advantages over alternative methods: not as many potential complications and a faster return to every day activity. Shockwave treatment is an option for the patient whose heel pain has not resolved with other treatments, such as the use of anti-inflammatory medications, steroid injections, ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices (shoe inserts), and physical therapy.

During the procedure sound waves travel through the heel area and stimulate the healing response. ESWT temporarily reduces or eliminates the sensation of pain. However, even with decreased pain, do not go directly back to normal activity because the foot needs time to heal. ESWT is very safe and effective, but every surgical procedure carries the possibility of complications. In addition to mild pain and tingling or numbness, bruising and swelling sometimes develops after ESWT.

As a podiatrist, I specialize in the care and treatment of the feet and ankles. In the last decade, I have seen firsthand that the incidence of heel pain in our general population has reached epidemic proportions.

Heel pain is experienced by people of all ages. I often see children who are suffering from heel pain, people who work all day on their feet, and older people who just wake up one morning with sharp, stabbing pains in their heels. There are a number of causes of heel pain and this free book will help give you the possible causes as well as ways to prevent or correct heel pain without seeing a doctor. You do not have to suffer and Heel Pain 101 helps you to know when you need to make an appointment or what you can do to help your heel pain at home.

I created this book to simply educate the public on the truth about heel pain. I want you to understand the causes of heel pain, the treatments available to you, and learn how to prevent heel pain in the future. I also wrote Heel Pain 101 so people can avoid wasting time and money on stores that claim to have the perfect solution. It upsets me to hear patients tell me about how they tried an expensive shoe or insert because they were told this would help solve their pain issue. It put it simply, heel pain is NOT normal and it CAN be treated without having to suffer.

You can order your free Heel Pain 101 book by going to www.neufoot.com and fill out the request form or by calling our office at (615) 220-8788.

This health fair was created to educate families on the aging process and many care options and services available to assist families on their journey. This was Rutherford County’s first seminar on aging. The health fair was educational, but fun for everyone involved including the vendors. One vendor created balloon flower bracelets for all the women at the event. What was the biggest hit at our booth? The stress feet! The vendors all enjoyed the stress ball shaped feet along with the guests who attended the event and visited our booth.

The next health fair our office will be participating in will be The Women’s Event at StoneCrest Medical Center on June 30thfrom 5pm to 8pm in the main lobby of the hospital. The event will include free food, wine tasting, jewelry, fashion, health demonstrations, free health screens, and giveaways. The event is free so come out and enjoy everything!

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a serious circulatory problem in which the blood vessels that carry blood to your arms, legs, brain, or kidneys, become narrowed or clogged. It affects over 8 million Americans, most over the age of 50. It may result in leg discomfort with walking, poor healing of leg sores/ulcers, difficulty controlling blood pressure, or symptoms of stroke. People with PAD are at significantly increased risk for stroke and heart attack. Answers to these questions will determine if you are at risk for PAD and if a vascular exam will help us better assess your vascular health status.

Do you have foot, calf, buttock, hip, or thigh discomfort (aching, fatigue, tingling, cramping, or pain) when you walk, which is relieved by rest?

Do you experience any pain at rest in your lower leg(s) or feet?

Do you experience foot or toe pain that often disturbs you in your sleep?

Are your toes or feet paile, discolored, or bluish?

Do you have skin wounds or ulcers on your feet or toes that are slow to heal (8-12 weeks)?

Has your doctor ever told you that you have diminished or absent pedal (foot) pulses?

Have you suffered a severe injury to the leg(s) or feet?

Do you have an infection of the leg(s) or feet that may be gangrenous (black skin tissue)?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, please call our office at (615) 220-8788 so we can examine your feet for Peripheral Arterial Disease. We also have a new test within the office called PADnet that will help test your blood circulation.

One reason may be plantar fasciitis or heel pain. If you have problems with your arches, flat feet, or you continually wear non-supportive shoes, the band of tissue could become inflamed. People with plantar fasciitis often describe the pain as worse when they get up in the morning or after they've been sitting for long periods of time. After a few minutes of walking the pain decreases, because walking stretches the fascia. Another reason could be tendonitis. A sudden increase in activity could cause the tendon to be placed under too much stress, resulting in a micro-injury with the tendon fibers. Continued stress decreases the likelihood of the tendon to be repaired ultimately causing continued pain. Therefore, when you wake in the morning, the tendon has tightened which increases this pain.

Most heel pain is caused by a ligament in the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. Plantar fasciitis is very common and can be treated with stretching, shoe changes, orthotics (shoe inserts), braces, medication and sometimes cortisone injections. A quick consult from a podiatrist will confirm the diagnosis and within a few weeks the pain can be gone. Most people live with plantar fasciitis because they think it is normal for their feet to hurt. Remember foot pain is NEVER normal! A great resource on basic foot problems is the book written by Dr. Neuhaus, Healthy Feet 101: Healthy Feet are Happy Feet. You can request a copy of the book on the home page of www.neufoot.com.

Adequate exercise includes walking briskly three times a week for 45 minutes at a time. Exercise also lowers cholesterol, stabilizes blood pressure, improves mood, boosts self-confidence, enhances the effectiveness of insulin, and prolongs lifespan.

However, managing your blood sugar is crucial to a safe exercise plan. You should check it before, during, and after your session. A test thirty minutes before you plan to begin will indicate whether exercise is safe. Be aware of your sugar levels during exercise and make sure you monitor your sugar level closely several hours after you finish.

You must also take special care of your feet when you exercise. Diabetics have an increased risk for neuropathy, and/or poor circulation, which makes you vulnerable to injury and infection. Thus, it is important to choose proper footwear. A protective exercise shoe has ample toe room, accurately cushions the ball of the foot, and stabilizes the heel. Since exercise places extra stress on your feet, you must be check for signs of injury. Do daily checks for cuts, sores, swelling, and infected nails, both before and after exercise. Wiggle your toes for five minutes, once before and once after exercise. If your feet are severely affected by neuropathy, try seated activity. Chair-based stretching and strengthening enhances everyday functioning.

For more information about Diabetes and Your feet, visit our website at www.neufoot.com or view more of the Diabetes Health article.
