What Does It Mean If My Toenail Is Darkened or Black?

Darkened or black toenails can result from a variety of injuries or problems and are essentially bruised nails.

Darkened nails can occur from something as small as your toe hitting the end of your shoe or the top of your shoe. However, even though bruised nails are not a serious injury, they can lead to a fungal toenail infection.

The pressure that caused the bruised nail can lead to a sore under the nail, which can cause the infection.

Treatment for a bruised nail may include trimming the nail back and applying a topical anti-fungal medication. If the skin under the nail is ulcerated, the topical antibiotic ointment should be applied to help avoid infection.

Diabetic patients should always contact their podiatrist for an evaluation if they experience any changes in nail color and should not attempt home treatment.

If you have a bruised nail and would like to set up an appointment with our office, you can contact us at 615-220-8788 or at our toll-free number 888-713-0906. You can also request an appointment online.
