Victoria Azarenka Withdraws From Brisbane International Semi-Final Match Against Serena Williams Due To Infected Toe

Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams were set to go head to head in the Brisbane International semi-finals on Friday and fans were expecting a good match.

Then, only 30 minutes before the match was set to begin, Victoria Azarenka, the 2012 Australian Open champion, withdrew from the match citing an infected toe as the reason for her withdrawal.

Apparently, her right big toe had become infected, possibly due to an ingrown toenail, and had been causing her pain for about 10 days before the match.

It seems that the ingrown toenail and/or infection may have been caused by a ‘bad pedicure experience.’ You can find information on getting a healthy pedicure here. Azarenka has seen a doctor and had the infection treated as well as having part of the toenail removed. She is now healing after the minor nail surgery and waiting to return to training.

Azarenka, the current World Number 1 ranked women’s tennis player by the Women’s Tennis Association, and her fans appeared to be sorely disappointed following the withdrawal, but she has expressed confidence that she will be prepared and ready to return to the court for the Australian Open, which begins January 14, to defend her title.

After Azarenka’s withdrawal, Serena Williams went on to the finals where she faced Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Saturday. Williams won the match.

Ingrown toenails can be a painful condition and often cause infection. Ingrown nails can be caused by injury, improper nail trimming, shoe pressure, a fungal infection, or just poor foot structure.

There are several at-home treatment options for treating ingrown toenails, but if you have an ingrown toenail that becomes painful or infected, you should see a podiatrist.
