Sharif “The Lion” Bogere Forced to Withdraw From HBO-televised Fight Due To Achilles Injury

Unbeaten lightweight contender Sharif Bogere was forced to withdraw from a match against Richard Abril for the World Boxing Association Lightweight World Title recently because of an injury to his Achilles tendon.

The match, which was scheduled for November 24, would have taken place in Ontario, California, during the HBO World Champion Boxing event, which will still air on HBO and will feature a fight between Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and Andre Berto.

Apparently, Bogere began feeling some pain during training early on in November, but tried to keep pushing through the pain so he could fight. That stopped when his ankle became swollen and his managers convinced him to see a doctor. After his trip to the doctor, his foot was put in a boot.

Fortunately, the tendon does not seem to be ruptured and he may be able to train again in as soon as four to six weeks. The championship fight that Bogere will miss on November 24 will be rescheduled, but there is no word yet on when the new date for the fight might be.

Most sports are hard on the feet and boxing is no exception. Boxing exposes the feet and ankles to injury and trauma as well as constant quick, repetitive movements that can be very difficult on tendons, muscles, and bones.

If you participate in activities such as martial arts or kick boxing, here a few tips to keep your feet and ankles healthy and safe:

  • Stretch before performing any kicking or punching. To prevent injury, you should always stretch for a minimum of 15 minutes before starting.
  • Always practice martial arts and kick boxing on appropriate surfaces.
  • Don’t push yourself beyond your limits and if you do injure yourself, do not push on through the pain. If you sustain an injury, see a doctaor before you continue training.

Some foot and ankle injuries commonly seen martial arts and kick boxing include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, ankle sprains, and sesamoiditis.

If you are suffering from a sports related foot or ankle injury and would like to set up an appointment, you can contact our office at 615-220-8788 or request an appointment online.
