Removing Ganglion Cysts
If more conservative treatment options don’t work, ganglion cysts are sometimes surgically removed.
Cyst removal surgeries are typically performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure consists of dissecting the cyst from the surrounding soft tissue and removing it.
The recovery period from ganglion cyst removal surgery depends on the location of the cyst and the amount of dissection required during surgery.
Patients will often need to use a splint or below-the-knee cast for a while after surgery. The patient may also need to use crutches.
Like with every surgery, there are some risks with cyst removal surgery.
- Nerve damage.
- Excessive swelling.
