Professional Athletes Come Together to Speak About Their Experiences with Gout

Several professional athletes have teamed up recently against a formidable adversary: gout.

Professional Football player Emmit Smith is the latest to join the group, which focuses on promoting the importance of treating and managing the pain caused by gout and having a good patient/doctor relationship.

Other athletes involved include basketball player Alonzo Mourning, pitcher David Wells, and racing crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion.

They have all come together and partnered with Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. to join in on the “Champions for Gout Awareness” campaign.

Gout can be extremely painful. It is often recommended that gout patients change their diet and/or make lifestyle changes to help manage gout pain. Medications may also be needed.

Gout is a form of arthritis and develops most commonly in men. Symptoms of a gout flare up often include pain, redness, and swelling in the big toe joint. Gout can occur in other joints, but the big toe joint is the most commonly affected.

If you believe you are suffering from gout, see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

You can contact the Neuhaus Foot and Ankle office at 615-220-8788 or at our toll-free number 888-713-0906. You can also request an appointment online.
