Jim Belushi Works to Spread The Message About Gout
In a recent interview with Men's Health magazine, comedian Jim Belushi talked about his new role as spokesman for "Check Out Your Gout". "Check Out Your Gout" spreads awareness of the disease, which is most common in men age 40 to 60 years old.
Belushi talked about his own experiences with Gout and how an intense pain in his knee, which radiated down to his big toe, eventually forced him to seek help, thus leading to his diagnosis.
"It took him years to discover that he suffered from the condition, " the Men's Health article stated.
So - what exactly is Gout and what does it feel like?
Gout sufferers often feel intense pain that comes on suddenly, frequently in the middle of the night, and also associated with redness, swelling, and warmth over the joint, most often the joint of the big toe.
"Gout has to do with elevated uric acid levels in your blood stream," Dr. Jason Knox said. "This can heppen from the food you take in or just because of metabolism issues you might have."
The tendency for accumulating uric acid is inherited, but there are other factores that can put you at risk, including: high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, surgery, chemotherapy, stress, and some medications and vitamins.
"Peope who have gout can tell you it is very painful," Dr. Knox stated. "What happens is the uric acid will get into the joint and become needle-like crystals in the joint, which causes intense inflammation."
If you suffer from Gout, it is important to get this treated because sever arthritis can be the result of leaving Gout untreated.
There are different treatment options available. Giving your foot rest or keeping it immobilized or elevated (level with or slightly above the heart) can help reduce swelling. Other treatments include steroid injections, anti-inflammatory medication, changes in diet and in some cases, surgery.
