Jim Belushi is continuing to spread awareness about gout with the website www.checkoutyourgout.com. The image below is from a video on the Check Out Your Gout website where Belushi talks about the condition.

Belushi appeared on Fox News last week to discuss gout during the Health Talk segment and talked about his experience with gout, when he was diagnosed, and tips on avoiding gout attacks during the holidays. The video can be found here.

Belushi himself suffers from gout and has for some time. However, he says he was reluctant to go to the doctor for treatment when he first developed the condition because he thought he could "tough it out." He didn't end up getting diagnosed and treated until the pain was so extreme it was affecting his performances.

Gout is a condition caused by a build up of the salts of uric acid in the joints. The big toe joint is the area most commonly affected by gout and men are more likely to develop the condition than women.

The main symptom of gout in the big toe joint is an acute throbbing in the big toe, which usually occurs in the middle of the night, and swelling in the big toe. The pain typically lasts about three or four hours, then subsides. The pain usually returns in the same toe with a few months.

You watch this video on gout, Gout of the Foot and Ankle, for information on the condition including how gout is diagnosed and what treatments options are available.

If you believe you are suffering from gout and would like to set up an appointment with our office, you can contact us at 615-220-8788 or toll-free at 888-713-0906. You can also request an appointment online.
