How X-Rays Can Help Determine Foot Health

X-rays can be very helpful in assessing foot health. Among other things, x-rays can help your podiatrist to determine whether or not a bone has been fractured or whether or not a bone has been damaged by disease, an infection, or a condition like arthritis.

There are many reasons your podiatrist may perform an x-ray on your foot or ankle.

Here are a few reasons for conventional x-rays on your feet:

  • Assess a child’s foot to see if bones are growing normally
  • Locate foreign objects in a wound (such as metal or pieces of glass)
  • Determine whether bones are properly set after treating a fracture
  • Evaluate changes in the bone due to infection, arthritis, or another bone disease

As you can see, x-rays are an important part of assessing your foot health and can be very beneficial in some cases.

However, some people are advised against having x-rays because of the radiation. Pregnant woman, especially those in their first trimester, are advised against have x-rays performed on them because the radiation may harm the unborn baby.
