Exercise Is Important For Every Part Of The Body, Even The Toes!
Our toes are a mostly overlooked part of our body. Other than when you get a pedicure or trim your nails, how often do you pay attention to your toes? Most of us would probably answer rarely or even never.
Many people don’t realize that our toes need exercise and to stay physically fit just like the rest of our body. Our toes take a lot of abuse when we spend hours on our feet every day or wear high heels or other shoes that put a lot of pressure on our toes. There are actually exercises specifically designed to strengthen the toes and prevent foot discomfort. Some of the exercises are recommended for specific disorders or injuries, but anyone can benefit from exercising the toes.
Below are a few toe exercises recommended by The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. All of the exercises are easy to do and the ones that require props usually only require ones that you can find in your own home.
- Toe raise, toe point, toe curl. Hold each of those positions for five seconds and repeat ten times.
- Toe squeeze. Put a small, cylindrical object between your toes. For example, a wine cork. Hold and squeeze for five seconds. Repeat ten times.
- Big toe pulls. Put a thick rubber band around your big toes and pull them away from each other toward your small toes. Hold for five seconds and repeat ten times.
- Towel curls. Put a small towel on the floor and curl it toward you, using just your toes. You can put a weight on the end of the towel to increase resistance. Relax and repeat five times.
