Boston Red Sox’ Alex Hassan Has Stress Fracture In Foot, Will Miss Out On Some Spring Training
It has recently been revealed that Alex Hassan, outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, has suffered a stress fracture in his left foot and will miss out on some spring training.
At this point, it is uncertain exactly how long his injury will keep him on the sidelines.
Stress fractures are an all too common sports injury and time and rest are very important parts of healing them. Sometimes rest and avoidance of the activity that caused the fracture are the only treatment needed.
Avoiding the activity that caused the stress fracture is very important because stress fractures tend to be brought on by repetitive stress from an activity. If you begin that activity again before the stress fracture is healed, you could worsen the fracture.
Other conservative treatments for a stress fracture include casting, immobilization, or a medical shoe. Keeping the injured foot immobilized gives the fracture time to heal. A wheelchair or crutches may also be used to prevent any weight from being put on the foot while the fracture heals.
Of course, treatment for a stress fracture depends on the severity of the injury. In some serious cases, surgery may be required to treat a stress fracture. However, most stress fractures are healed with just time and immobilization.
